Jacksonville, NC to Myrtle Beach, SC

February 4, 2014 22:03 – 22:03

I’m at the Comfort Suites… the one at 710 Frontage Road East, Myrtle Beach, SC, US, 29577. I need to remember this place and NOT to stay here again. The rate is cheap enough this time of year—less than $70 before taxes. But, the internet speed is abysmal—only 500K. The furniture in the room is very rickety. The legs on the desk are literally falling off—I’ve had to put them back on several times.

On the way up from Jacksonville, I stopped at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge in Hardeeville, SC. It looks promising for future visits. There’s a short trail near the visitor center, and a longer wildlife drive a mile or so away, with several longer hiking trails. I also picked up half a dozen brochures for other NWRs in the area.

Once I checked into the hotel, I quickly unloaded the car and headed for Drunken Jack’s, in Murrell’s Inlet. It’s been at least five years since my last visit. They still serve hot hushpuppies with honey butter as an appetizer, and they’re still wonderful. For dinner, I had a combo with fried scallops and jumbo fried shrimp. They were good, but not quite as exquisite as I remember… but still better than just about any other sit-down restaurant I know of in North America… except for the Five Fishermen in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Tomorrow, I head for home. I hope that today’s and tomorrow’s rain washes any residual snow away so that the sidewalks are walkable. While I’ve tried to walk every day, I’ve managed my usual 8 miles only about half the time.
