25 Things I Associate with Virginia

May 15, 2015 08:03 – 08:03

Somebody posted a list of 25 things they insist that anybody from Virginia has done. I’m from Virginia—10 years in Norfolk and almost 50 years in/near Alexandria—and I’d actually literally done only 12 things on the list. For example, I’ve never played cornhole, and I refuse to believe that that smarmily-named game has anything at all to do with Virginia.

While I’m familiar with Virginia’s tourism slogan, I have no idea where it came from. “Virginia Is for Lovers” makes absolutely no sense to me. And, while I’d recognize Virginia’s state flag, the images on it are a mystery to me, although I’m positive that some teacher tried somewhere along the way to teach it to me.

Plus, while I’ve been to Busch Gardens (exactly once—and I hated it) and Williamsburg, I never went to either place on a field trip. When I was in school, we never would’ve gone to an amusement park on a field trip. And, Williamsburg was considered too far away for field trips from where I went to school (Norfolk and Fairfax County). We did go on field trips to the Norfolk City Jail, Constitution Hall (concerts), and the White House, though.

In any case, I came up with my own list of 25 things I associate with growing up and living in Virginia. I’ve omitted some of the bleaker chapters, like growing up with segregation, the school boycotts in the 1950s, classmates whose fathers and grandfathers were active members of the KKK, and the corruption conviction of a recent Virginia Republican Governor.
