Huntley Meadows on August 1st 2015

Saturday, August 1st, 2015

I don't usually blog my local visits to Huntley Meadows. But, I'm going to try to change that, even if I end up posting more pictures and not a lot of text. At about 7 this morning, I decided to get an early start at Huntley Meadows. So, naturally, one delay ...

Action through My Bedroom Window!

Sunday, June 7th, 2015

A lot of wild action could be seen through my bedroom window this morning. I know—you're shocked! "You live right next to a church, for crying out loud! There are young kids in the neighborhood!" Let them get their own damn groundhogs. When I looked out the window this morning--without my glasses--I ...

Of dreams, wetlands, and ice

Sunday, March 2nd, 2014

Sometimes, my dreams are clearly dreams. They involve people I know in odd permutations and circumstances, and might be a combination of clearly warped memories, projections, and fantasies or hopes. But, it's clear that these are creations of my mind, and are not actual memories of things that ever happened. Other ...

Muir Woods, Napa, and More

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

I just had a beautiful California orange for breakfast. Notice, I said "beautiful" and not delicious. I've come to believe that Florida fruits are bred for taste, while California fruits are bred for beauty... and that THAT'S the real reason there are agricultural inspection stations near the Republic of California's ...

How I Spent My 39th Anniversary

Friday, June 14th, 2013

Just about every Friday I venture down to the nearest Hardees for breakfast. The nearest Hardees is in Stafford. After breakfast, if it's not too hot, I then go for an 8 mile photohike at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Today was a perfect day for Occoquan Bay. Except, when ...

Is this a copperhead? It was sunning itself half-in and half-out of my garage this morning.

The Dog Bite, Part II

Here's what my wound looked like about 48 hours after the dog bite:

The Dog Bite

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Here's a recap of my Saturday dog bite adventure. At about 12:15 pm, I was walking along the sidewalk in the 1900 block of Shenandoah Road, minding my own business when someone's medium-sized leashed weimaraner lunged and bit my exposed forearm. I was wearing a long sleeved shirt with the ...

Tree Pollen is Here

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Okay, self. This is an official brief note that today, March 9, 2010, is the official start of "my nose is driving me crazy" season. The tree pollen has arrived. I'm not providing pictures.

Where have all the flowers gone?

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

On Thursday, I ventured down to Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge to see what could be seen—and to exercise my new T1i (which I use with a Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD). There were quite a few flowers still blooming. I don't know what any of them ...

Tick

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Today, I found a deer tick on my left leg. I have the tick in a plastic bag--it's a little larger than a poppy seed. There was no blood when I pulled it off (intact), but the area where it resided was pinkish-red.
